“Fit for Kings” - Historic Renovation on Kings Highway

August 16, 2017

Part 1 in a series of updates on the transformation of a Lewes treasure at 401 Kings Highway:

If you live in Lewes, you have undoubtedly seen the landmark stunner at the corner of Kings Highway and Washington Avenue. Built in 1871, this “grande dame” of Lewes has aged gracefully, all things considered, but like the rest of us, needs some TLC to keep that youthful glow.

Enter Karen and Guy Buttaro! Originally from Northern Virginia, they have had a presence in Lewes for the past 20 years, owning 608 Kings Highway until they sold it last January. They embarked on this labor of love in July with the purchase of 401 Kings Highway, and have plans for its return to grandeur.

A little history:

The property is listed in the National Register of Historic Places for its contribution to our town. Unique in Lewes, it is an example of Italianate architecture in the Picturesque Movement style – a late 18th and early 19th century response to more exacting Neoclassic architecture. Whatever the technical nomenclature, this home definitely has a “WOW factor!” Hallmarks of this home include the fascinating exterior with its roofline and eaves, interior spacious rooms, high ceilings, an impressive staircase, and classic wide mouldings. Initially, the Buttaros set to clearing the overgrowth on the property and taking stock of the project.

We can’t wait to see what the Buttaros have in store – and we invite you along to find out! Stay tuned!
