5 Great Choices for Saint Patrick's Day Weekend 2017

March 17, 2017

While we’re still a few weeks away from the return of our popular “Weekender Blog”here on theoldfathergroup.com, there are a few things going on this weekend in and around Rehoboth Beach that we felt warranted the attention of the masses.

Recent temperatures not withstanding, it’s been a milder than normal winter here at the Delaware beaches, which traditionally translates into a longer extended season between mid-March and mid-May.

In other words, we’re expecting a lot of people at the beach this weekend, so we thought we’d highlight a few of the special things there are to see and do here for the next two or three days.

We’ll kick if off with what has really become one of the area’s top annual festivals, particularly during the early part of the season. And that is…

The 27th Annual Rehoboth Beach Chocolate Festival (March 18). We’ve already done a separate writeup on this wildly popular annual gathering, which you can read in its entirety HERE. But here’s a quick rundown…

This Saturday, March 18, representatives from 20 area restaurants will be competing at the Atlantic Sands Hotel & Conference Center in many chocolate-related categories. And you’re invited to attend!

Ticket prices range from $20 to $30 and “tastings” are held between 11 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Harry K Foundation, an organization committed to fighting childhood hunger in Delaware.

Read our full blog entry on the event, or call 302-226-0675 for more information.

Starboard Opening/St. Patrick’s Day Party (March 17-19). If you’re interested in the time-honored St. Patrick’s Day tradition of consuming alcoholic beverages, then the Starboard has what you’re looking for.

This is the opening weekend for the popular Dewey Beach watering hole (the 2014 opening is pictured above), so expect a lot of fun and excitement, particularly since it’s coupled with one of the most popular “drinking holidays” of the year.

The Starboard itself promises a lot of craziness over the weekend, including some “mischievous leprechauns” running wild on the premises.

A large tent will take over the bar’s outdoor areas for the annual event, so be sure to check on the parking situation before you go. Or just use an alternate means of transportation.

The Starboard is located on Route 1 in Dewey Beach. Visit thestarboard.com for more information.

Rehoboth Beach Cherry Blossom Beach Fest (March 17-19). A new entrant into coastal Delaware’s festival calendar for 2017 is the inaugural Cherry Blossom Beach Fest, mean to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of Delaware’s sister relationship with Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture.

And what better place for a Japanese-inspired festival than at the popular Cultured Pearl restaurant on Rehoboth Avenue?

Events are planned for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, with the main event happening between 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 18. This will be an indoor Japanese Street Fair at “The Pearl,” and admission is free and open to the public.

Crafts, games, souvenirs, music and traditional Japanese street foods will all be featured, as well as a Japanese “Cosplay Fashion Show,” beginning at 1:30 p.m.
