Bayhealth Milford Memorial Medical-Surge Nurse Laura Jermyn, BSN, RN, CMSRN, has been recognized with the coveted DAISY Award for providing extraordinary nursing care. The DAISY Award is given by the DAISY Foundation, which was formed in 2000 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. The Barnes family wanted to recognize the nurses who cared for Patrick and all the other “unsung heroes” of the nursing profession.
Jermyn was nominated for the award by the wife of a recent patient at Bayhealth Milford Memorial. The family was filled with anxiety and worry while spending time in The Emergency and Trauma Center, but was instantly relieved to see Jermyn as their nurse when he was admitted to the hospital. “Her professional demeanor gave me so much trust that I knew my husband would be cared for with the highest standard of nursing excellence,” the nominator wrote. “I was able to go home and rest knowing she was going to watch over him and provide the best care for him. Hospitals are scary even when you know the environment, but having a nurse that you can trust with your most precious family is priceless.”
“It was very sweet to know she took the time to write the letter,” Jermyn said. “I’m driven by the patients we care for, especially knowing we really can affect people’s lives. Seeing how thankful our patients are and how sweet they can be makes it worth it.”
Hospitals and healthcare systems across the country, including Bayhealth, partner with the DAISY Foundation on the award. DAISY is an acronym for Disease Attacking the Immune System. The goals of the foundation include funding research and evidence-based practice projects that affect the treatment of patients with auto-immune diseases.
