Beebe Healthcare is now a Member of the Center to Advance Palliative Care

July 21, 2016

Beebe Healthcare is now a member of the Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC). As a member institution, all of Beebe’s staff have free access to essential tools, training and technical assistance for frontline clinicians.

Casey Walsh, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, DNPc, Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner, said this resource will open the doors for our staff at Beebe to have evidence based education and training in palliative care, which will ultimately improve our patient outcomes.

Palliative Care is patient—and family—centered care that optimizes quality of life by anticipating, preventing, and treating physical, intellectual, social, emotional, and spiritual needs associated with serious or chronic disease(s).

Although, palliative care has its origins in the hospice movement, its focus is on quality of life while patients face serious or chronic diseases and decisions surrounding their medical care. Today, hospitals are developing palliative care teams to provide compassionate inpatient treatment options. Patients continue to receive curative treatment with a stronger emphasis on quality of life with Beebe’s Palliative Care Team.

Palliative care teams serve as the liaison between patients, care providers, and families. Patients and healthcare teams report positive effects, including increased quality of life from palliative care services, in addition to reduced medical costs.

The Center to Advance Palliative Care provides:

  • Highly interactive pain management and communication skills online training
  • Designation status in pain management and communication skills
  • Webinars and virtual office hours with CAPC faculty
  • Moderated discussion forum
  • More than 400 tools

“Many of our clinicians treat seriously ill patients, so they will be able to get a lot out of this new resource,” Walsh said. “We are hoping this continues the conversation of palliative care in our community and that our team members continue to learn more about all that palliative care offers.”
