Here’s What’s Happening the Weekend of August 26-29 in Coastal Delaware

August 25, 2016

With only two more weekends remaining in coastal Delaware’s traditional summer season, the opportunities for enjoying those warm, carefree days at the Delaware beaches are dwindling with each passing nightfall.

So be sure to get out and enjoy the coastal region while everything is still open and in full swing, before the kids go back to school (some already have) and the “daily routine” again begins to dominate everyone’s daily lives.

With that in mind, we have a few choices for this coming weekend, both here in coastal Delaware as well as in neighboring Ocean City, Maryland, where a couple of huge annual events are slated for the next few days.

It’s been a remarkable Summer of 2016 here at the Delaware beaches, not only in terms of leisure and fun, but also as it relates to business. It’s no secret that tourism is one of the major economic drivers here in the coastal region, as well as an industry that, as a whole, ranks as one of the top employers in the state.

Here at the Oldfather Group, we’ve also had a record year in terms of real estate listings and sales and we expect, when all is said in done in December, to retain our ranking as one of the top real estate firms in Sussex County.

But as this is the “Weekender Blog,” we know you’re not here to learn about annual sales figures. You want to know what’s going on here in coastal Delaware over the next few days, so we’ll get right to it.

Here are our choices for the extended weekend of August 26-29 at or near the Delaware beaches:

Bargains on the Broadkill (August 27). This annual event takes place in Milton and features a full day of activities for the entire family. There will be more than 50 vendors on site at Milton Memorial Park, as well as plenty of great food and other surprises in ready supply. A highlight of the day is the Great Duck Race on the Broadkill River, with cash prizes given to the first 25 finishers. Top prize is $500. Visit www.historicmilton.comfor more information on this fun, family-friendly event.

Broadkill Canoe and Kayak Race (August 27). Held in conjunction with the signature Bargains on the Broadkill event in Memorial Park, this 10 mile canoe and kayak race down the Broadkill River is one of the most competitive in the region and pits nearly 100 paddlers against each other, all of whom are competing for prizes and medals. North American Sea Glass Festival (August 26-27). Not to be confused with the Mid-Atlantic Sea Glass Festival held every year in downtown Lewes, this event in Ocean City is held over two days at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center on Coastal Highway and features a plethora of events for the entire family. Join sea glass jewelry artists, experienced collectors and other vendors, while also taking part in presentation and lectures, at this immensely popular annual event. The main festival runs on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m, but there’s also a special event on Friday evening from 5 to 9, for a cost of $10 per person.
