Here’s What’s Happening the Weekend of Sept. 30 - Oct. 1 in Coastal Delaware

September 28, 2016

This time last year, we were dealing with a powerful coastal storm that ultimately caused the cancellation of many great local events, including the wildly popular Wings & Wheels festival at the Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown.

While weather forecasts and predictions are always changing here on the peninsula, this year seems much more promising, not only for Wings & Wheels, but also for several other happenings and events scheduled for the next few days at or near the Delaware beaches.

We’re now in the heart of southern Delaware’s fall festival season and we hope you’re enjoying all of these great local events during what is a fabulous time of year throughout the region.

This weekend not only marks the return of Wings & Wheels, but also fantastic events in Lewes, Dewey Beach and Rehoboth Beach. So get out there and have some fun over the next few days in coastal Delaware.

And please also return here to our blog page regularly for great local content, including new features we’re starting now on the local restaurant scene and local history.

Please take a minute and read the first edition in the latter category, on Lewes’s Fort Miles by clicking HERE and learning all about this historic fort and the important role it played during World War II.

Now, here are our choices for the weekend of Sept. 30 to Oct. 1 at or near the Delaware beaches:

Wings & Wheels (September 30 – October 1). Now in its eighth year, this fantastic local festival features, as the name suggests, a bevy of old cars and old airplanes. Located at the Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown, this FREE Saturday event features World War II re-enactors, great food, a varied selection of entertainment, craft vendors and a question and answer session with 101-year-old Doolittle Raider Lt. Col. Dick Cole. The Friday night pre-show event is reminiscent of the “camp shows” made popular during World War II, complete with a 16-piece 1940s era jazz and swing band. Tickets for Friday night’s show are $45 and can be purchased by calling 302-856-1544. For more information on the 2016 Wings & Wheels festival, visit www.wings-wheels.com.

Boast the Coast Maritime Festival (October 1). This annual event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1 and is sponsored and organized by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce. This festival is usually associated with Sunday’s Coast Day festivities, but that event has been cancelled for 2016 due to construction at the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean and Environment campus in Lewes. So this year’s Boast the Coast festival includes several local events rolled into one, including the Lewes Merchants’ Fall Sidewalk Sale, tours of the historic Cannonball House, the Lewes Life-Saving Stationand the Lightship Overfalls and the Lewes Historical Society’s Fall Craft Fair. This year’s craft fair is on the grounds of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry due to renovations ongoing at the historical society’s campus on Shipcarpenter Street. For more information on the 2016 Boast the Coast Maritime Festival, visit the Lewes Chamber of Commerce online.
