The Joint Commission Certifies Beebe Healthcare’s Hip and Knee Replacement and Spine Surgery programs

January 17, 2017

The Joint Commission has awarded Beebe Healthcare with a Certification for hip and knee replacement surgery programs and a Certification for Beebe’s spine surgery program.

These disease-specific certifications mean that both surgery programs have met the highest national standards and guidelines that can significantly improve outcomes for orthopaedic surgery patients.

The Joint Commission issues a certification only after an on-site review is completed. Surveyors visited Beebe Healthcare in November 2016 to assess the hospital’s commitment to excellence in providing disease-specific services in a comprehensive manner. Based on the review, which examines the hospital’s use of performance improvement measures and initiatives, programs, organization, leadership, and patient outcomes, The Joint Commission decided to re-certify both surgical programs. The programs were last certified in 2014 and the certification lasts for 24 months.

“We are extremely proud of our hip and knee replacement program and our spine surgery program here at Beebe,” said Joe DeRanieri, DM, MSN, RN, BCECR, Executive Director of Orthopaedic Services, Physical Rehabilitation Services, and Integrative Health at Beebe Healthcare. “Each member of our orthopaedic services team focuses on achieving the highest standards of quality for our patients. It is truly a team effort that ensures our patients are receiving the best care during their orthopaedic surgery stay at Beebe.”

Beebe Orthopaedic Services utilizes a patient-centered, evidence-based approach to care. In addition to the high quality standard of care for patients once they are admitted, each hip and knee replacement patient and each spine surgery patient attends a free education class prior to the surgery date. At the class, the patients are informed of the procedures, what to expect, how to have the best experience possible, and what to do to care for the surgical site when they return home. “Our Orthopaedic Services team here at Beebe is really what makes the program shine,” said Steven Rhone, RN, BSN, MS, NE-BC, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, Beebe Healthcare. “Each team member is highly skilled, many with advanced certifications, and each one of them is fully committed to treating each patient like family and giving each person the best experience possible. That is the Beebe difference.”

Beebe Healthcare was recognized with Five Star ratings for orthopaedic surgery by Healthgrades, the leading online resource helping consumers make informed decisions to find the right doctor, the right hospital for the right care. Beebe was recognized as a:

  • Five-Star recipient for Total Knee Replacement for 14 Years in a Row (2004-2017), the only on Delmarva;
  • Five-Star Recipient for Spinal Fusion Surgery for 8 Years in a Row (2010-2017).
  • Five-Star Recipient for Total Hip Replacement in 2017.

Five-Star rating indicates that Beebe’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated, according to Healthgrades.
