Life’s Purpose – Artha

Yoga’a ancient teachings clearly describe the four goals of life as its purpose. These goals are:  Dharma (fulfilling your responsibilities); Artha (creating and utilizing wealth); Kama (enjoying pleasures); an Moksha (freedom, enlightenment). All four of these goals are essential throughout your life. Without them, you will feel incomplete.

The second of the four goals is Artha (creating and utilizing wealth). Financial wealth is one of the things that make life rich and bountiful. It is an essential part of life. It can relieve financial pressures and some worries if you have steady supply of funds. However, it can also create problems if you begin to worry whether it is enough or if it can be taken away. Wealth alone is not enough.

Money is not the problem – it is your relationship with money that stirs the mind. Yoga and meditation is about quieting the mind. As my teacher says, “Life without wealth is barren. Life focused on wealth is barren. You must cultivate wealth and you must also transcend it.”
