Is This The Original American Pumpkin Pie?

Is this the original, American Pumpkin Pie?

According to the popular food blog http://soufflebombay.com, it may very well be.

Blogger Colleen states in her post titled “The Original Pumpkin Pie – The Way The Pilgrims Made It”, that early English settlers, not having access to butter or flour, improvised by “hollowing out pumpkins, filling the shells with milk, honey and spices to make a custard” before roasting them whole in hot ashes.

The result is a beautiful and seasonal dish that, according to Colleen, tastes a lot like crème brulee. You can find her detailed recipe and read about her experience with the early American dish online at http://soufflebombay.com/2014/11/the-original-pumpkin-pie-way-pilgrims.html.

Colleen told me she was happy to share the recipe (and her beautiful photograph of the results) so If any of our viewers or readers feel experimental enough to tackle the pumpkin recipe (fortunately modified to work in your over verses roasting in hot coals), we’d love to see and hear about the results!
