A Quintet of Great Events Highlight Early April at the Delaware/Maryland Beaches

April 4, 2018

Welcome to April everyone, and what's often the most challenging month of the year in terms of dealing with Mother Nature.

Will it be warm? Will it be cold? Will it rain? Could it possibly even snow?

As with most Aprils on the Delmarva Peninsula, the answers change from day to day. But the good news is that the arrival of April signifies that the warm weather season is nearly upon us, and that means the coastal region is once again coming to life.

And the Oldfather Group's regularly scheduled "Weekender Blog" will be here all the way through early December, giving you everything you need to know for making the most of your weekends here at the Delaware and Maryland beaches.

As always, we have some great options for you to consider this weekend. Here are our choices for fun and exciting things to do in the coastal region during the weekend of April 6-8 (with an added event planned for early next week):

Lewes Tulip Celebration (April 6-15). More than 15,000 tulips are currently blooming around Lewes, in parks, at museums and at many other public locations.

The volunteer group “Lewes in Bloom” has been hard at work making the town as beautiful as possible for this 10-day celebration of the tulip. Throughout the festival, there will be several events offered by the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and its partners, including trolley tours, a celebration of the town’s Dutch heritage, the "Lewes TWO-Lips Culinary Week" festivities and much more.

Visit the Lewes Chamber of Commerce's website for more information on this early spring event at the Delaware beaches.

Delaware Resorts Home Expo (April 7-8). Cape Henlopen High School is the location for this 21st annual event, which typically draws 2,000 or more visitors to coastal Delaware over two days.

Scheduled hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 7, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 8, with real estate agents, developers, builders, mortgage loan officers and service companies all scheduled to attend.

The event is free for the public and all participants can sign up for free gifts and prize giveaways.

Lantern Tour of the Indian River Lifesaving Station (April 7). Take advantage of a special opportunity this spring to view the historic Indian River Lifesaving Station via a memorable lantern tour. These tours are held throughout the year, but this first one of the season is being held prior to Memorial Day Weekend, and before summertime crowds arrive.

Participants will have the opportunity to visit the 1876 structure and then venture out onto the beach to hear special stories of the station through the years.
