Several Community Events Planned for Memorial Day Weekend 2018

Happy Memorial Day Weekend 2018 everyone!

Yes, with the arrival of this earliest of summer holidays, coastal Delaware's high season is officially upon us. We've got so much to look forward to over the next few months, highlighted by warm weather, longer days and many fun and exciting things to do here at the Delaware and Maryland beaches.

First and foremost, though, we urge everyone to pay respect this weekend to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that we can all live good lives here in this country.

Their selfless acts ensure that we remain safe and secure in the United States, and able to enjoy all that makes living here in the coastal region such a wonderful experience.

So get out this weekend and have some fun with family and/or friends, visit some of the great events we're previewing below and just generally enjoy the long holiday weekend. But please take a moment to recognize the meaning of the day in the process.

Okay, on to our highlighted events for Memorial Day Weekend 2018. As always, we've found some great happenings for you to consider.

Here are our top five choices for fun and exciting things to do in the coastal region over the 2018 Memorial Day Holiday Weekend.

Prime Hook Horseshoe Crab & Shorebird Festival (May 26). This 15th annual festival is scheduled for both Milton Memorial Park and Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, and will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 26.

This annual festival celebrates horseshoe crabs and migrating shorebirds, two mainstays of coastal Delaware’s animal world. 

Activities at this fun yearly festival include entertainment, a children's activity tent, guided canoe trips, nature walks, bird house building and plenty of other fun activities. There will also be more than two dozen vendors and an assortment of food trucks present at the event, as well as a free shuttle bus taking members of the public between the two locations.

This event is hosted by the Milton Chamber of CommercePrime Hook National Wildlife Refuge and the Milton Historical Society.

Lewes Memorial Day Parade (May 28). This patriotic annual parade is sponsored by American Legion Post 17 and the City of Lewes. It begins at Lewes Presbyterian Church on Franklin Avenue at 11 a.m., and ends at Post 17 on Legion Road in Lewes. 

The Ladies Auxiliary will also be selling cupcakes and promoting poppies from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Poseidon Festival (May 25-28). This multi-day festival in Bethany Beach is designed as a way for community members to "celebrate the sea" while learning about ways to prepare for coastal emergencies.

The Bethany Beach Bandstand will serve as home base for the four days of the festival, which will include nightly entertainment and fun for the entire family. 

The event kicks off on Friday, May 25, with music by "the Bullbuckers," followed by a showing of "Dead Men Tell No Tales" on the beach. Saturday, May 26, features activities at the Nature Center beginning at 10:30 a.m., with nightly entertainment including an "Emergency Meet and Greet" at the Bandstand from 5:30 until 9 p.m., a steel drum concert at 6 p.m. and music by "Parrotbeach," beginning at 7:30.

Things continue on Sunday, May 27, with a "Hermit Crab Derby," beginning at 1 p.m., and music by the United States Navy Cruisers Band at 7:30. A Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. and the steel drum duo "Island Fusion" wrap things up on Monday, May 28.
