Six Great Events Highlight This Weekend's Coastal Calendar

May 3, 2017

You’ll notice a theme in our latest “Weekender Blog,” and that’s the fact that many of this weekend’s events center in and around historic Lewes.

And that’s not by accident.

Drawing on the popularity of the annual merchant’s sidewalk sale, Lewes officials began tying in many other events to the same weekend over the years. So today, the first weekend in May is a huge early-season boon for Delaware’s “First City.”

We’ve featured a few of these events below. But there are even more that we didn’t have room to include, like the Lewes in Bloom Spring Plant Sale, the Historic Lewes Farmers’ Market and the Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park's annual Wine, Cheese and Beer Tasting.

You can read more about all of this weekend’s events in the “First Town in the First State” at the Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s website.

You can also read more below about three of the bigger events, namely the Blessing of the Fleet, the British Motorcar Show and the aforementioned Spring Sidewalk Sale.

Outside of Lewes, Ocean City kicks off the 2017 season this weekend with its annual Springfest festivities at the inlet parking lot. There are lots of activities planned for this four-day event, so be sure to check out our writeup of the festivities below.

And there’s also a new addition to this year’s event calendar, at Trap Pond State Park, that we think you might be interested in.

All in all, it’s another busy weekend here at the Delaware beaches. So be sure to get out and enjoy it to the fullest.

We start this week’s list of featured events in Lewes…

Blessing of the Fleet (May 7). Beginning at 2 p.m. at Fisherman’s Wharf in Lewes, this annual rite of passage is aimed at keeping boaters safe during the upcoming season and is a fun event to watch from along the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal.

Representatives from local churches say prayers for the vessels, as well as the owners, doing so one-by-one from a waterside dock.

This year marks the 30th year local mariners have been “blessed” before heading out on the waters for another summer season. Come out and take a look!

Wetlands Celebration Day (May 6). This is a new event on southern Delaware’s 2017 calendar and will be held this Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Trap Pond State Park, located between Millsboro and Laurel.

Events include free boat tours, guided wetland walks, youth fishing, science and educational programs, live music, food vendors and more.

The first 150 vehicles to arrive at the park on Saturday will be allowed entry free of charge. For more information, call 302-875-5163.

Springfest (May 4-7). This popular annual event officially kicks off the season in neighboring Ocean City, Maryland, and draws huge crowds to the seaside resort.

Centered at the inlet parking lot in south Ocean City, this free four-day festival features an abundance of great entertainment, including several local and regional bands.

There will be four big-top style tents set up at the inlet, featuring food, crafts and more. Headliners for this year’s event are Joan Jett and the BlackheartsJosh Turner, the Fabulous Hubcaps and local favorite Bob Lougheed & the Memphis Mafia.
