Southern Delaware Named A "Bucket List" Destination

June 27, 2016

We certainly think that coastal Delaware is a wonderful place to live and work, with 26 miles of Atlantic coastline, an abundance of inland bays and waterways, some of the best locally owned restaurants on the east coast and plenty of fun and excitement for all age groups.

But we have a confession to make – living here year-round like we do, we never considered our area to be a so-called “bucket list destination” until we read a story recently on the travel website www.visitsouth.com.

But there it was, a fantastic story about our area entitled “Top 12 Reasons to Make Southern Delaware a Bucket List Destination.” And it got us thinking about the title and the assumptions made by the writer.

And we came to the conclusion that he’s right – southern Delaware is, in fact, a destination that you simply must experience before you kick the proverbial bucket.

So, let’s discuss the “12 Reasons” the writer talked about and add our own Oldfather Group flair to each one.

Here we go:

  • Beaches and Watersports. Anybody who knows anything about coastal Delaware knows that this is a given. In fact, if you take a trip to our beautiful area of the world and DON’T go to the beach or jump in the water, it is a rare occurrence indeed. From swimming and surfing, to skimboarding, parasailing, paddleboarding and much more, there is no shortage of water-related activities during coastal Delaware’s warm weather months.
  • Lighthouse Exploration. By taking advantage of the Southern Delaware Lighthouse Trail, you can visit, view and/or learn about 10 lighthouses that are currently featured at the Delaware beaches, or have been in the past. Learn about the lights on the Delaware Breakwater and in Fenwick Island, as well as the historic Cape Henlopen Lighthouse that fell into the sea decades ago, and much more.
