Sports at The Beach Greets Spring with Pickleball

Sports at The Beach celebrates the arrival of Spring with a full slate of Pickleball activities.  For those not yet in the know, Pickleball – a mix of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong – is the new sensation being embraced nationwide.  The game, which officially began in the 1960’s and has been steadily gaining steam ever since, has rocketed into one of the fastest growing sports of today.  With simple rules, the game is easy to learn for beginners, yet provides a fast-paced, competitive experience for more advanced players.  Four players - two on each team - use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a wiffle ball, over a net. The sport shares features of many other racquet and paddle sports: the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, a net and rules somewhat similar to tennis, and the immense, fast-paced fun of ping-pong.

With the 2016 opening of its Indoor Academy, Sports at The Beach has become the premiere venue at which to play Pickleball in all of Sussex County.  Located inside the SATB Complex at 22518 Lewes Georgetown Hwy, in Georgetown, Delaware, “the Indoor” offers four new courts dedicated to the sport, with a regular set of Social Play sessions, as well as private court rentals that are more tailored to individual preferences and personal schedules.

In addition to the top-notch offerings of the facility itself, and the flexible play options, The Indoor Academy also offers an extensive ensemble of Classes and Clinics.  Under the direction of respected Pickleball Instructor Doug Worman, the Indoor Academy offers lessons for all skill levels, from beginner to advanced.  From standard Skills & Drills sessions to focused practice sessions to advanced technique, tactics, and strategy sessions, Doug has created a Pickleball program that is well-suited to anyone interested in the sport.  No matter the skill level, the Indoor Academy offers the tools needed for advancement.

First-time players will be particularly interested in the Intro to Pickleball Course, currently offered on Saturday mornings at the Indoor Academy.  Designed for players new to the Pickleball experience, this course, also led by Doug, consists of three (3) individual classes held across a three-week period and covers everything needed to learn the sport - rules, terminology, primary skills, coordination and more.  New players are encouraged to sign up for the entire course at once, and a discount is offered to those who do.  For those looking to learn the sport in private, arrangements can be made for Private Lessons - individual or group - either at the Indoor Academy itself, or at another venue, if preferred.

One of the most popular offerings this time of year – the Bring Pickleball to Your Community program - allows interested persons the opportunity to host Pickleball lessons at their residential communities, introducing the sport to their friends and neighbors.  Proven to be an effective tool in building interest in Pickleball, this program is a great way to help grow the sport even further, as well as expand the skills of the players who love it so.

Spring is indeed finally in the air.  Now get out there and dink!
