Statera Homes doesn’t install vinyl windows. No other builder in our price range can say this.
At Statera Homes, we believe our clients want luxury and value. We think our clients understand that value doesn’t always mean the lowest price. We also think that value includes high quality at a great price. As we have said in the past, Statera Homes is not the lowest priced builder in the market.
One thing that sets Statera Homes apart in terms of value are the windows we use. We don’t install vinyl windows in our new Delaware homes. We use Andersen windows, and they have a composite frame. This can make a huge difference in quality, efficiency and durability.
Quality:
In most Statera communities, we use the Andersen 100 series window. This single-hung window is constructed from Fibrex. Fibrex is a composite material that was created by Andersen, and it is a mix of epoxy and wood fibers. Fibrex performs like a wood frame window, but it does not have the potential to decay like a wood frame windows.
These windows, unlike vinyl windows, have their own structural integrity. Most builders use vinyl windows, and these windows have plastic frames. A Fibrex window is more than twice as strong as a vinyl window.
Vinyl windows have a heavy plastic frame. This is very cost effective, but it creates some problems.
Vinyl windows lack internal strength. In all fairness, a window is being installed into a wood framed house, so the window’s internal strength is only one factor. At the same time, all windows are going to be attached to the house, and this attachement creates a bearing point. That bearing point puts stress on the frame. A vinyl window is does not have the structural integrity of a composite window to keep its shape when installed.
Efficiency:
There are a number of Delaware beach home builders that tout their windows as being hugely energy efficient and such. All that is great, but I’ll explain why solar coatings on windows in Delaware beach homes are a HORRIBLE idea in another post. The truth of the matter is that no window is efficient if its installation causes it to leak air from around the window itself.
For example, let’s say that you home is built in the summer, and your windows are installed on a sunny, summer day with the temperature in the 90’s. You window was installed and sealed tight on the day of installation. In fact, a few weeks later, there was an air seal test done on your house, and it sealed up tight.
In January of that year, it was cold. Here’s what is happening to your tightly sealed, property installed vinyl window- it is shrinking. When the window shrinks (because it’s made of plastic) in the cold, it pulls away from all of those tight seals it had with the wall (and within the window itself). Now you have a leaky window.
If you install in the winter, you can find a window that won’t open or close in the summer- it has the opposite problem. It is expanding, and it binds and bends.
Regardless of the solar gain, U-factor and all the other features of a window- a leaky window negates all of those features. It doesn’t matter how good the window panes perform if the air is leaking through the frame.
Statera’s Andersen windows aren’t vinyl, and they don’t move like a vinyl window. This saves you money. Any home energy expert will tell you that air sealing is more important than insulation.
Durability:
Since the Andersen 100 series window is much stronger than a vinyl window, it will withstand the elements and use far longer than a typical vinyl window. This reduces cost of ownership. This means value.
