Why We Live Here . . . The Lakes of Rehoboth Beach

Silver Lake, Lake Gerar and Lake Comegys are three unique freshwater lakes, located only blocks to the Atlantic Ocean in Rehoboth Beach.  They were formed by the flow of melting glaciers during the last Ice Age.  The ocean once covered these lakes until it receded to its current position.

According to the late local historian, Warren H. Macdonald, the lakes in Rehoboth were convenient sources to collect fresh water before heading out to the ocean; settlers tried several times to prevent pirates from doing so by sending armed men to chase them off.  Before the production of manufactured ice, local farmers would cut blocks of ice from these lakes in the winter, to keep their food from spoiling.

Today, residents and visitors enjoy visiting Lake Gerar in North Rehoboth, Silver Lake in South Rehoboth and Lake Comegys by Dodds Addition to view the beautiful waterfowl and walk the scenic paths. (Source: sola3)
