‘Sonic Sea’ film screening set at South Coastal library April 26

The public is invited to a free showing of “Sonic Sea” at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 26.

Oceans are a sonic symphony. Sound is essential to the survival and prosperity of marine life, but man-made ocean noise is threatening this fragile world. “Sonic Sea” is about protecting life in water from the destructive effects of oceanic noise pollution.  

The movie explores the noises that hurt sea life, like whales and dolphins. For example, the sonic blasts planned for oil research prior to oil drilling off the Atlantic Coast can damage the hearing of sea mammals, sea turtles and other oceanic creatures. The public is invited to learn about this assault on the ocean and to find out what actions can be taken.

The film was produced in cooperation with the Natural Resources Defense Council, and is directed by Michelle Dougherty and Daniel Hinefeld. This award-winning documentary brings together beautiful cinematography and audio effects that draw viewers into this ethereal underwater world.

This film is being sponsored by local environmental nonprofit organizations Sierra Club Sussex County, Citizens' Climate Lobby - Lower Delaware, and the Marine Education, Research and Rehabilitation Institute.
