‘The 39 Steps' to open at Riverfront Theater Jan. 26

January 21, 2018

"The 39 Steps," a fast-moving physical comedy spoof by Patrick Barlow, adapted from the 1915 novel by John Buchan and based on the movie by Alfred Hitchcock, will open Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Riverfront Theater in Milford. Director Tommye Staley has come out of retirement to choreograph the Second Street Players in their first production of the 2018 theater season.

Show dates are Friday to Sunday, Jan. 26 to 28, and Feb. 2 to 4 with curtain times at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m., Sundays.

The story begins with Canadian Richard Hannay, a visitor to 1930s London, becoming unsuspectingly involved with a glamorous, mysterious woman while attending the theater. This chance meeting leads him into a series of uproarious adventures involving trains, planes and automobiles, hiking across moors, eluding the police, using false identities and confronting villains as he tries to unravel the mystery of the 39 Steps. Actors playing multiple characters, quick scene changes and mixed Hitchcock references will keep the audience spellbound.

Cast members include veteran Second Street Players Jose Bernard, Carol Torrey, John Moller, Phil Staley, Lezlie Eustis and Tommy Tritely, supported by Glenn Outten and the Harbeson women, Mary, Naome and Emily. Stage Manager Art Paul is assisted by Rosemary Paul and Beverly Henderson. Assistant director is Mike Amory.

Riverfront Theater is at 2 South Walnut St. on the south bank of the Mispillion River in scenic downtown Milford. The theater is handicapped accessible and can accommodate the hearing impaired.

All tickets are reserved seats and are priced at $17. For Sunday matinees only, a $1 discount is offered to senior citizens 65 and over, and students 18 and under.
