‘Ascending Afghanistan: Rising Women’ film event at Lefty’s June 4

May 23, 2018

Ascend: Leadership Through Athletics will be screening the film “Ascending Afghanistan: Rising Women,” during a fundraiser set for 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, June 4, at Lefty’s Alleys & Eats in Lewes.

This inspiring VICE Impact film follows Afghanistan’s first female mountaineering team as they attempt a first ascent of a previously unclimbed peak in the stunning Panjshir province and work to overcome the complex social boundaries of being a young woman in Kabul.

Virginia-based nonprofit Ascend: Leadership Through Athletics runs women’s empowerment and leadership development programming in Afghanistan.

Since the filming in 2015, Ascend has continued to train Afghan women to be changemakers for their communities and trailblazers for peace through a combination of sport (hiking, rock climbing and mountaineering), leadership development courses and volunteerism.

After the film, current Afghan mountaineers in Kabul will take part in a live-feed question-and-answer session along with Ascend board member Brenda Stewart of Milton, and Ascend founder and Executive Director Marina LeGree.

Lefty’s will offer a special event-themed dinner menu and drink specials for before or after the screening. A drawing will be held for Dogfish Head Brewery prizes.

Tickets are $15. To purchase, go to www.eventbrite.com/e/ascending-afghanistan-rising-women-delaware-premier-tickets-45021357091.

All proceeds will support Ascend’s programming in Afghanistan, empowering these young women to continue climbing mountains and moving mountains.

Lefty’s Alleys & Eats and Brenda and Neal Stewart are generously sponsoring this event.
