‘Fire at Sea’ to open at Cinema Art Theater Jan. 20

January 20, 2017

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society's Cinema Art Theater will present "Fire at Sea," a powerful portrait of the small Sicilian island of Lampedusa. Screening times are 4 p.m., Friday, Jan. 20; 7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 21; 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 22; 4 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 25;  and 1 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 26.

The first documentary to ever win the top award at the 2016 Berlin International Film Festival, "Fire at Sea" takes place in Lampedusa, a once-peaceful Mediterranean island that has become a major entry point for African refugees into Europe. Situated 150 miles south of Sicily, Lampedusa is where viewers meet Samuele, a 12-year-old boy who lives simply, climbing rocks by the shore and playing with his slingshot. Yet nearby, viewers also witness thousands of men, women and children trying to survive the crossing from Africa in boats that are too small for such a journey.

Filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi masterfully places these realities side by side, and in so doing creates a remarkable third narrative that jolts audience members into a new understanding of what is really happening in the Mediterranean today. Tickets can be purchased at the Cinema Art Theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening. Admission for a screening is $8 for film society members and $10 for nonmembers. The address is 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza, behind the Lewes Wawa.
