‘Follies’ live musical screenings to open Jan. 20

January 17, 2018

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society announces the next play in the series of National Theatre Live screenings that present the best of British theater live from the London stage on film to cinemas around the world.

Stephen Sondheim's legendary musical "Follies" is staged for the first time at the National Theatre. Tracie Bennett, Janie Dee and Imelda Staunton play the magnificent Follies girls in this dazzling new production. The play features a cast of 37 and an orchestra of 21.

It's New York, 1971, and there's a party on the stage of the Weismann Theatre. Tomorrow the iconic building will be demolished. Thirty years after their final performance, the Follies girls gather to have a few drinks, sing a few songs and lie about themselves. They sing and dance their old numbers, and confront past regrets and misplaced hopes. This is a look at the decay of American show business and the dangers of living in the past.

Screenings will be 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 20; 12:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 22; and 6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 23, at the Cinema Art Theater in Dartmouth Plaza behind the Lewes Wawa.

Admission for National Theatre Live is $18 for film society members, $20 general admission and $15 for ages 16 and under. Online reservations are encouraged and may be made with MasterCard or Visa. For more information or to make a reservation, go to www.rehobothfilm.com.
