‘Lady MacBeth’ opens at Cinema Art Theater Sept. 22

September 22, 2017

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society's Cinema Art Theater will present “Lady MacBeth,” a drama about a woman's struggle to break free from the repressive patriarchy of her time, with screenings starting Friday, Sept. 22.

The setting is rural England, 1865. Katherine (Florence Pugh) is stifled by her loveless marriage to a bitter man twice her age, and his cold, unforgiving family. When she embarks on a passionate affair with a young worker on her husband's estate, a force is unleashed inside her so powerful that she will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

William Oldroyd's feature debut shifts Nikolai Leskov's 1865 novel “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” from Russia to the northeast of England. The starkness of the moors perfectly mirrors the cold austerity of the manor house Katherine is confined to. When she breaks out, the world around her is shaken to its core.

Screening times are 4 and 7 p.m., Friday, Sept 22; 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Sept 23 and 24; 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 25; 1 and 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept 27; and 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 28. Tickets can be purchased at the Cinema Art Theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening. Admission for a screening is $8 for RBFS members and $10 for nonmembers. All screenings are held at the Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza behind the Lewes Wawa.
