‘Salome’ play to be screened at Cinema Art Theatre

August 10, 2017

The Rehoboth Beach Film Society announces "Salome" as the next play in the exciting series of National Theatre Live screenings, set for 1 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 14 and 15, at the Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza behind the Lewes Wawa.

National Theatre Live is a groundbreaking project that presents the best of British theater live from the London stage on film to cinemas around the world. Internationally acclaimed theater director Yaël Farber draws on multiple accounts to create her urgent, hypnotic production of "Salome" on the stage. The story has been told before, but never like this. In an occupied desert nation, there is a radical from the wilderness on a hunger strike. And there is a girl whose mysterious dance will change the course of the world. This charged retelling turns the infamous biblical tale on its head, placing the girl called Salomé at the center of a revolution.

Her story shows how Rome's suppression of the people and religion of Judea acted as a catalyst in her transformation from subjugated young girl to the woman who came to be known as Salomé. The production looks amazing, with restlessly rotating stages, slow-mo physicality, cinema-epic robes and the aura of antiquity. The design is opulent and grandiose, with the staging often looking like a living painting. The film stars an international cast of actors and features beautiful singing throughout.

Admission for National Theatre Live is $18 for film society members, $20 general admission and $15 for ages 16 and under. Online reservations are encouraged. For more information or to make a reservation, go to www.rehobothfilm.com.
