“Columbus” to open Oct. 27 at Cinema Art Theater

October 23, 2017

Starting Friday, Oct. 27, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society's Cinema Art Theater will present “Columbus,” a beautiful drama about unexpected friendship blossoming out of tragic circumstances.

When a renowned architecture scholar falls suddenly ill during a speaking tour, his son Jin (John Cho) finds himself stranded in Columbus, Ind. - a small Midwestern city celebrated for its many significant modernist buildings. Jin strikes up a friendship with Casey (Haley Lu Richardson), a young architecture enthusiast who works at the local library. As their intimacy develops, Jin and Casey explore both the town and their conflicted emotions: Jin's estranged relationship with his father, and Casey's reluctance to leave Columbus and her mother. With its naturalistic rhythms and empathy for the complexities of families, “Columbus” unfolds as a gently drifting, deeply absorbing conversation. With strong supporting turns from Parker Posey, Rory Culkin, and Michelle Forbes, “Columbus” is also a showcase for debut director Kogonada’s striking eye for the way physical space can affect emotions.

Screening times are 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 27; 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 28; 4 p.m., Monday, Oct. 30; and 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 1. Tickets can be purchased at the Cinema Art Theater starting 30 minutes prior to each screening. Admission for a screening is $8 for RBFS members and $10 for nonmembers. All screenings are held at the Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive in Dartmouth Plaza behind the Lewes Wawa.

The mission of the RBFS is promoting cinematic arts and providing education and cultural enrichment for the community.
