October 6, 2016

It’s Columbus Day weekend, which can only mean one thing – there will be a large contingent of greyhounds in the Cape Region for the next few days.

The 22nd annual Greyhounds Reach the Beach kicks off Thursday, Oct. 6, with registration and check-in at the Sleep Inn, 18451 Coastal Highway in Lewes.

The annual event brings dozens of the slender sighthounds to the area and there will be greyhound-themed activities all weekend.

There will be self-guided beach walks at 8 a.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday, beginning at Read Avenue in Dewey. There will be a full slate of speakers and veterinarians for attendees to listen too and consult all three days at the Sleep Inn. Vendor tents will be set up in the parking lot of the motel, and various locations in Rehoboth and Dewey.

A silent auction, taking place at the Sleep Inn and featuring items donated by vendors, begins Friday, Oct. 7, and ends 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8.

On Friday, Oct. 7, there is Blessing of the Hounds at 2 p.m., at the Sleep Inn; an ice cream social at 5:30 p.m. at the Adams Ocean Front Motel, 4 Read Ave. in Dewey; and a Beer and Biscuit Mixer and raffle at 7 p.m. at Revelations Craft Brewery, 19841 Central St. in Rehoboth.

On Saturday, Oct. 8, there is an art workshop for registered attendees beginning at 10 a.m. at the Sleep Inn.

The event winds down Sunday, Oct. 9, with a greyhound parade at 10 a.m. on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk followed by an aerial group photograph on the beach.

Greyhounds Reach the Beach is under the management of The Grapehound Wine Tour, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit and Delaware registered charity, which manages greyhound events around the country. The organization brings people together to celebrate their greyhounds, create awareness of the need for foster and adoptive homes, and raises funds to support greyhound adoption.

In 2015, the Grapehound Wine Tour, Inc., through its work in running greyhound events, donated over $20,000 to greyhound and sighthound adoption groups and the Greyhound Health Initiative.
