Albert ‘Al’ C. Hillegas, retired police officer

Albert "Al" C. Hillegas, 81, of South Bethany, formerly of Lanham, Md., passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at his home.

Al was born in Johnstown, Pa., Nov. 13, 1936, son of the late Eugene and Mary (Baka) Hillegas. He was a 1954 graduate of Franklin High School in Johnstown. Al also proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-57.

After his discharge, Al then began his career with the Metropolitan Police Department, retiring in 1983 with the rank of captain. Al then owned and operated his own home improvement business.

He also coached for several years at the Lanham Boys & Girls Club. Al was an avid sports fan and loved spending time on the water fishing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Donna L. Hillegas, in 2002, and a son, David Hillegas in 2017. He is survived by five children, Daniel Hillegas of Lusby, Md., Cynthia O'Brien and her husband George of Silver Spring, Md., Matthew Hillegas and his wife Maria of Hanover, Pa., Michael Hillegas of Glen Burnie, Md., and Barbara Hillegas of Pasadena, Md.; nine grandchildren; a brother, Dennis Hillegas and his wife Mary Ann of Frankford; and his companion of 15 years, Pat Fox of South Bethany.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 23, at the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Road, Ocean View, where friends and family may call after 10 a.m. Interment will be held privately at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.
