ALERT: Lewes Bike to Work with the mayor postponed due to rain

May 15, 2018

May is National Bike Month in the United States, and the City of Lewes will be joining cities and towns all over the country when car lovers ditch their four-wheeled gas guzzlers for two-wheeled transportation machines of a cleaner variety. At the April city council meeting, Mayor Ted Becker proclaimed May as Bike Month in Lewes and noted that Friday, May 18, is Bike to Work Day. Due to rain, the ceremonial ride that had been planned in Lewes has been postponed.

His proclamation also recognized the efforts of the Lewes Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, which is organizing the mayor’s bike to work ride and the fact that Lewes has been recognized as a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community for a second 4-year term by the League of American Bicyclists.

Mike Tyler, chairman of the Lewes Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, said, “Biking to work is an efficient and fun way to get the exercise you need without having to find extra time to work out.”

Here are some tips that will help people enjoy biking to work more: Have bikes checked by a local bike shop. Always wear a helmet to protect the head in the event of a crash. Ride in the right-most lane with traffic. Obey all stop signs, traffic lights and lane markings. Look before changing lanes or signaling a turn; indicate the intention, then act. Be visible and predictable at all times; wear bright clothing and signal turns.
