Aquacare physical therapist receives concussion management certification

September 11, 2016

Donielle Brasure, PT, DPT, has been a physical therapist since 2001 and worked for Aquacare since 2003. She has been certified in vestibular rehabilitation since 2008 and has recently acquired her certification in Concussion Management from the American Institute of Balance.

Aquacare's concussion management includes but is not limited to the six-stage protocol for safe return to physical activity and sport that is suggested for the physical exertion portion component of dealing with a concussion. Aquacare's program addresses the multiple symptoms that may arise through the course of recovering from a concussion. Listed below are symptoms associated with concussions and potential treatments.

Brasure is trained to examine, screen and treat areas affected by the concussion, including the brain, inner ear, eyes, neck, and cognitive issues. Concussion symptoms treated include: headache, imbalance or uncoordinated movement, dizziness or vertigo, feeling “foggy,” sensitivity to light or sound, sleeping more than usual, increased fatigue, mood or personality changes and difficulty with concentrating or memory.

Nearly 1.7 million people sustain a concussion, a traumatic brain injury, in the U.S. each year as a result of a sports accident, motor vehicle accident or a fall. Concussion may affect male and female athletes at any age or level of competition. The implications of concussion on cognitive function, school performance and mental state can be detrimental to any athlete. The concussion management program provides participants with a comprehensive overview of all aspects of concussion identification, assessment, therapies and return to play processes.

Brasure is available to see patients at Aquacare’s Millville office. For more information or to schedule a free consultation about concussion managment, call 302-539-3110.
