Athletes of the Week April 13

April 13, 2018
Zach Dale

Zach is a multi-position football player who moved from quarterback to wideout, then played inside and outside backer on defense. Dale is now a beast with a bat and a dirt-track dragster on the base paths. In three games for Cape baseball, Dale had two hits, including a double in a 4-2 win at Middletown and a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game versus Milford; he followed all that with a 2-for-3 performance against Smyrna, which included a home run and three RBIs. Dale doesn’t pay lot rent in right field; he owns it. “Zach is a complete baseball player,” said coach Ben Evick. Dale will head to Delaware State in the fall, where he will play baseball, and if the football staff is hip, they will have this left-footer punting for them.

Lakendra Harpe

A senior sprinter at Sussex Tech by way of Mariner Middle School, Lakendra is a bona fide 400-meter runner and a triple threat, as she also runs the 100 and 200 meters. “I think her best race is the 200 meters,” said Mariner’s Kenny Riedel, who helped coach her in middle school with Jules Jackson. In a tri meet against Cape and Milford April 10, Lakendra won the 100 in 12.7, 200 in 25.4 and 400 in 59.7. She also anchored the winning 4-by-200-meter relay team. Earlier in the season, she was a triple winner against Dover, and the Senators have lots of fast people. Her dad, Stanford, went to Cape, and her Aunt Terri was a track star for coach George Pepper.

Zach Savage

Zach is a smooth operator on the baseball field. He stays cool as a catcher, whether in a cloud of dust with a runner bearing down on him or catching a ring-him-up third-strike curveball. On April 6 against Milford, the left-handed swinger had the Cyber Smack of 2018, launching a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to lead Cape to a dramatic 8-7 victory. Savage handled pitchers Austin Elliott, Zack Gelof, and Mason Fluharty over seven innings. Savage had a bases-clearing triple in the April 10 12-2 win over Smyrna, and in a 4-2 win at Middletown April 5, Savage caught Liberty University-bound David Erickson, who allowed one earned run and struck out eight over five innings.

Maryann Tietbohl

This Cape honors student is having a great season on the tennis courts, posting a 3-0 record in first singles match play. She has dropped only two games to her opponents so far this season. "Maryann defeats her opponents by outplaying them," said Cape coach Laurie Carter. "We call her the Energizer Bunny, because she just goes on and on until she wins." She is also a champion on horseback, showing her thoroughbred in English competitions around the area. She is a member of the Cape honor society and is currently ranked No. 1 in the Class of 2019. In her spare time, she helps instruct tennis at the Villages of Five Points courts and loves spending time at the beach.
