Athletes of the Week April 20

April 20, 2018
Madison Buchwald

Madison is long, strong and the quintessential crossfit athlete. A swimmer, runner and field hockey player, Madison is also ranked academically in the top 10 of her class. She will be heading to the University of South Carolina to major in biology. Madison won the Daffodil Dash 5K April 14 under tumble-dry windy conditions, then came back and ran the Hustle for Hooch 5K the next day under Klondike cold conditions. Madison was right in the middle of Cape’s upset win at the Henlopen Conference Championships earlier this year, placing fifth in the 500 free and seventh in the 200 free, both with personal best times. Madison also swam on the 400 free relay, which placed fourth.

Timesha Cannon

Track meets are skewed toward sprinters and jumpers, and sophomore Timesha Cannon is Cape’s top eliminator. Coming out of the successful Beacon girls’ program, she has developed as an athlete and a person every year since the sixth grade, said Beacon coach Tim Bamforth. Cannon placed in four events at the Keith Burgess Invitational April 14, placing second in the 100 meters in 13.3, running anchor on the third-place 4-by-200 relay, and anchor on the second-place 4-by-100 relay, and competing in the triple jump. At Polytech April 17, Timesha won the 100 and 200, and placed second in the triple jump as the Cape girls of coach George Pepper improved their dual-meet record to a perfect 5-0.

Reagan Ciabattoni

This Mariner eighth-grader was born to be a jumper. A 5-foot-9 bundle of fast-twitch ferocity, Reagan racked up a meet-high 28 points at the 12-team Jim Blades Invitational April 13 in Felton. She won the triple jump with a 33-foot-6-inch effort on her final attempt, dominated the long jump with a 15-foot-7-inch mark, and placed a close second in the 400 meters in 1:04.9 despite winning what was ostensibly the “fast heat.” Reagan set personal bests in all three events and established new Mariner records in the long and triple. Reagan also starred for Mariner’s field hockey and basketball teams, plays club hockey and is a fixture on her school’s “A” honor roll.

Sydney Hollinger

This Cape sophomore is on her way to making quite a name for herself in the local bowling lanes as well as across the country. Sydney recently won the United States Bowling Congress Delaware Pepsi Tournament in Wilmington with a scratch average of 220. This ensures her a spot in the Junior Gold Championships this summer in Dallas, where it's her third consecutive trip to the championships. She also took top honors at the Delaware Top 15 Tournament Championships in Dover, where she bowled a scratch 258 game with a 231 average, and took home a $500 scholarship. An honor roll student at Cape, Sydney is also a volunteer coach with the Beacon Middle School track team and enjoys body building at RISE in Rehoboth.
