Athletes of the Week April 21

April 21, 2017

Ethan Ghabra

“We need our midfielders to step up and score for us,” said Cape lacrosse coach Mark D’Ambrogi after his Vikings defeated the Shipley School 9-0 April 18 in Bryn Mawr, Pa. “Today, it was Ethan’s turn. He came in there and made two big shots against a hot goalie [senior Colton Gallo]. Once we get everybody going at the same time, we’re going to be a good team.” Ethan will attend the University of Delaware in the fall and major in business.

Sean Grahne

Sean is a tall and lean long pole defender who can run and rag on an attacker. No. 14, who is bound for Clemson University in the fall, had a stellar game versus the Shipley School, as Cape went to the Philadelphia Main Line and came back with a rare 9-0 shutout victory. “We don’t have a lot of talkers on our defense,” Sean said. “We’ve been playing together a long time and know what we have to do.” Sean did know that Cape shut out Sussex central 15-0 in 2016 and Smyrna 21-0 in 2014, but the Shipley Gators (6-3) were hanging around, trailing just 3-0 at the half. “We knew we had to keep it close until our defense got going,” Sean said.

Jordan Jefferson

Jordan is an eighth-grader at Mariner who is a sprinter for coach Kenny Reidel. The young man can flat-out fly. Jordan clocked a time of 11.54 in the 100 meters and 24.7 in the 200 meters in a recent meet against Selbyville. He also won the 800 in 2:28 with a jog and sprint at the end in his first time running the race. Jordan anchored the Mariner 4-by-200 to first place at the recent Blades Invitational won by the Mariner boys for the first time. Jordan was also second in the 400 meters at the Blades Invitational. Jordan is a major talent with a bright future in the sport of track and field.

Dillon Mocci

A senior long pole defender, Dillon has great speed and a talent for charging into the mixing bowl and coming out with possession of the ground ball. Dillon was all over the field in Cape’s 9-0 win at the Shipley School April 18. “Mocci Man” is the player with contagious high energy; when he gets it going, his teammates get it going. Dillon will head to the University of South Carolina in the fall, where he will major in business and play lacrosse.
