Athletes of the Week Aug. 18

August 18, 2017
Leslie Fazio

This Lewes native and Sussex Tech graduate is a junior at Delaware State University and the starting goalie on the Hornets soccer team. Leslie was an all-state player in 2013 and 2014 and helped the Ravens win back-to-back Henlopen Conference championships in 2013 and 2014. Leslie has worked her way into a starting position. She appeared in seven games as a sophomore, which included a 2-0 shutout win over St. Peter’s. Leslie had 27 saves on the season as a sophomore. The Hornets open at Marist Friday, Aug. 18, then host Wagner Sunday, Aug. 20, and host Navy at DE Turf Friday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m.

Devin Miller

Devin is an undersized 6-foot-4, 255-pound starting tackle for the Division III Wesley College Wolverines. The junior is coming off two straight semesters of being on the dean’s list. Go back to undersized and try that helmet on for size. Devin is a specimen with little body fat, great strength and quickness, and good feet and balance. “Great kid who has worked hard to earn a spot in the starting lineup,” said Wesley head coach Mike Drass. “Devin just really came on when we had him at Cape,” said coach Bill Collick. “He just gets off the ball and gets after people. You win football games with high-character players like him.”

Sammy Mohr

Delaware Valley head football coach Duke Greco says, “Sammy made an immediate impact on the team last year both in the secondary and on special teams. He is one of our leaders on the team, and we expect him to have another great season in 2017.” Sammy started college at Wesley and through his own wily self and with the help of his mom got himself in at Delaware Valley University. They made the financial numbers work; then he earned a starting spot on a pretty good Division III football team. Sammy was a three-sport stud at Cape, playing football, wrestling and lacrosse. Last season, the Aggies were 9-2, including a 21-14 win at Wesley. DelVal will host Wesley Aug. 31 at 7 p.m.

Brandon Nixon

Brandon, the quintessential student/athlete, is a redshirt freshman football player at the University of Delaware. He didn’t see the field in his true freshman season, but he still made the CAA All-Academic team with a 3.4 cumulative GPA while majoring in applied mathematics. “I’m a defensive lineman right now weighing 275 pounds and benching about 405 pounds,” Brandon said. “I am physically healthy, no lingering injuries on the football side. I’ll probably be a reserve guy fighting for playing time.” Brandon was a leader at Cape in the classroom and on the football field. He also threw the shot put for the track team. Like the other three athletes in this lineup, Brandon will take care of his academics while battling for his chance to get playing time.
