Athletes of the Week July 22

July 22, 2016

David Angell

No misguided angel, he just followed the electric cart July 17 at the Seashore Striders Five-Miler, a flat course that incorporates Henlopen Acres and North Shores and ends at Deauville Beach. A former Roanoke College runner who won five ODAC titles while in college bested the field in a time of 25:53, which is a 5:11 mile pace for five miles. “I’m a better runner in the last four years than I was in college,” said Angell, a computer programmer who trains on his feet and works on his seat. “I turn 40 in October and am looking to the USATF Nationals,” he said. “I think at 40 my best distances are the 10-mile to half marathon.” Angell trains 85 miles a week, which would kill most people.

Chase Boyle

A Mariner Middle rising eighth-grader, this hard-throwing, right-handed pitcher has put 15 batters in the book via the strikeout in eight total innings on the mound during the District 3 tournament. He can also get it done at the plate as he is batting .538, which is the highest on the Milton squad. Chase has slammed two dingers, two doubles and three singles picking up 10 RBIs in the process. "Chase hits the ball hard," said Milton Manager Rusty Rauch. "He's a competitor and just a great kid." With his hitting and walking five times so far during the District 3 tournament, his on-base percentage is .700. When not competing with the All-stars and the Bagel Bombers, Chase likes to relax at the beach.

Patrick Hager

Patrick, 30, not only looks cool and runs cool, but in real life he is that guy. On July 16 at the Race for the Ribbon in Rehoboth, Patrick cruised to first place in a modest time for him of 16:32. Back in 2012, Patrick placed second in the Rehoboth Marathon. Patrick is currently the head cross country and track coach at Houghton College in New York. Hager is also a cofounder of Team S.W.I.F.T (Strength, Wisdom, Integrity, Faithfulness and Truthfulness), a racing team of Messiah alumni founded to give runners a chance to stay connected to their teammates after graduation and to glorify God with the blessing he has given in running. He is a really good guy who owns a personal best 2:35:54 in the marathon.

Tyler Husbands

This rising eighth-grader at Mariner Middle School has been a home run terror in the Major League District 3 championships, going yard four times in three games including a grand slam while knocking in 11 RBIs. He is batting .500, only striking out once and walking three times. Tyler also has a .600 on-base percentage. He not only gets it done at the plate, he also has struck out 13 in just five innings on the mound. "Ty is lights out when he pitches," said Milton Manager Rusty Rauch. "He's been like that all year." When not pitching, he plays first base for the All-stars and the Bagel Bombers travel team. An A student at school, he plays baseball and wiffleball in his spare time. "I love baseball," he said. "I just love baseball.
