Athletes of the Week March 17

March 17, 2017

Brayden Fannin

Cape girls’ soccer coach Patrick Kilby said, “I've had the privilege of coaching Brayden in the club setting at River Soccer Club. She was a year younger than her teammates at the time and grew into her role quite quickly. Now at the high school varsity level, she has really come into her own. She is running the central midfield with great vision and facilitating the attack quite nicely. She scored four goals against Northampton, Va., March 10.” Brayden started as a freshman, then missed most of last season with a broken ankle. “First, I want the team to win, then do my job distributing the ball, and, lastly, score,” she said. Brayden takes honors classes and is an honor roll student.

Colleen Donohoe

A junior center back on the Cape girls’ soccer team, Colleen is the younger sister of Connor and Quinn. She defines herself as a defensive player who is the most vocal on the team during the game. Coach Patrick Kilby said, “Colleen and Claire [Rasin], center backs, are a two-headed monster that runs our defensive third. They play off one another with excellent communication and pace.” Colleen is a top-shelf honors and Academic Challenge student who also takes AP classes. She plays travel ball, as do most of the girls on the team, and aspires to be a physician’s assistant down the road.

Keegan Pando

A senior at St. Andrew’s School in Middletown who hails from Lewes, Keegan emerged as a top-flight athlete at the DIAA State Swimming Championships in February. Keegan swam 48.86 in the 100 freestyle to place fourth in the state, 1:47.52 in the 200 freestyle for sixth, and he anchored the 400 freestyle relay that finished second with a time of 3:20.37. For his efforts, he was recently named first team all-conference and first team all-state. He started swimming at age 5 for the Lewes Yacht Club during the summer, and he has been a varsity swimmer since his freshman year at St. Andrew’s. In addition to swimming, Keegan also plays varsity soccer and will row for the crew team this spring. He is an A student, a community service mentor and a tenor in the choral scholar program. He will attend Middlebury College in the fall, where will study international relations.

Claire Rasin

A sophomore center back who transferred from Appoquinimink after having played varsity her freshman year, Claire lives in Dewey Beach with her mom and dad and four brothers. “I’ve been playing soccer and travel ball since I was a little kid,” she said. “I just love coach Kilby, and we have a very athletic team. The entire team has played travel ball.” “Colleen [Donohoe] and Claire together on our back line will be tough to beat,” Kilby said. “They are smart, knowing how to pressure and cover with balance.” Claire is an honors and honor roll student who says, “My greatest strength is I’m really hardworking.”
