Athletes of the Week May 18

May 18, 2018
Brayden Fannin

A tough senior soccer player who always seems to be suppressing a smile and, according to her coach Pat Kilby, understands the next man up mentality. “When I called her number after Lucy [Siranides] went down, she didn’t flinch. She is a great teammate and leader. She gets the job done wherever she plays.”  Field players make great goalies, but most run the other way, not wanting to find a home where enemy’s strikers roam. Brayden had a great waist-high kick save late in the game versus Caesar Rodney to keep the game tied at 1-1. Even though she was wearing gloves, she just forgot she could use her hands. Brayden was all over the place, making sliding tackles and clearing balls as the Riders applied relentless pressure late in the game, but the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Grace Gast

A day in the life of a talented three-sport Dover athlete. At the May 14 game, Cape lacrosse had a pair of missions – win the game against Dover’s best team ever and shut down their prolific scorer Grace Gast. Cape took the game 18-2, but midway through the first half Grace fought her way through sticks and checks to notch her 200th career goal. Grace accomplished this hours after learning her maternal grandmother had passed away. “It wasn’t easy,” said her dad Mike. “But she dealt with it.” Grace played five years of Eastern Shore Lacrosse (coaches Steve Judge and Dave Frederick) and she is friends with the 10 seniors on Cape’s team. She started on defense for the Dover field hockey team that upset Cape last fall. She is also a swimmer and member of the Honor Society. Grace will play club lacrosse at Delaware next year.

Brooke Hollingsworth

“Brooke understands that she is our goal scorer,” said Cape soccer coach Patrick Kilby. “She takes her job seriously.” Hollingsworth, a junior, scored a goal a minute into the second half against Caesar Rodney May 14, tying the game at 1-1. The goal was the first scored by a Cape player against Caesar Rodney since Alex Coverdale in 2011. “Brooke knows she’s a threat to every team we play,” Kilby said. “She thrives in this role, scoring double-digit goals each year as part of our program.” And there was none bigger than Monday night’s goal in an electric game fittingly ended in overtime by nearby lightning.

Lindsay Monigle

The statistical leader in goals (36) and assists (46) for Cape’s top-seeded girls’ lacrosse team, Monigle goes to the X position behind the goal and is the captain of the Cape offense. Most leading scorers on lesser teams have higher goal totals, but they take more shots and never come off the field. Cape’s top four goal scorers are Lindsay, Mallory Jones with 31, Alia Marshall with 29 and Katie Frederick with 24; they have combined for 120 goals this year. There are another seven players with double digits in goals scored. Lindsay can also run from the midfield; it’s impossible to take her out of her game because her game is your game – some lax players just have that sixth sense. She also has a .590 shooting percentage, 23 ground balls and 17 draw controls. Cape will open tournament play at home Saturday night, May 19.
