Athletes of the Week May 25

May 25, 2018
Talbot Buck

A big, strong sophomore and first-year varsity starter for Cape, the coaching problem was not if they should play her, but where can Talbot get the most minutes and do the most damage to other teams? Close defense with only internal team glories is great place to hide in plain sight but never leave the field. The better the competition, the more time the enemy is going to spend in your neighborhood. “Talbot is a physical and steady player with great feet and lacrosse intelligence,” said coach Lindsey Eichner. “She and Jillian [Seker] have stepped up to every occasion. Those two with Annie [Judge] and Jody [Boyer] give us a back line that’s the best in the state.”

Caroline Donovan

A junior midfielder for Archmere with a local pedigree from Donovans of Lewes and Millmans of Milton, you don’t get any more Cape connected. Caroline has verbally committed to William and Mary for lacrosse, so you know she has all the academic stuff covered. She battled Annie Judge all game in the draw circle May 23, then ran point into Cape’s stingy defense and still managed three goals in the game. “Each game is its own lesson,” Caroline said after the game. “We need more good teams in the state to get ready for a team like Cape. They are fast, and everybody on the field plays at a high level.”

Jillian Seker

This junior and first-year starter moved from midfield to defense because she is relentlessly aggressive and can run like the wind. “She and Talbot [Buck] have been working extremely hard and have been a constant in the back for us,” said Cape coach Lindsey Eichner. “Both girls have stepped up when we needed them to.” And now with just the state championship game remaining, Jillian has to step up just one more time, which shouldn’t be hard because she has never stepped down. Cape’s back line defense – throw in all-staters Jody Boyer and Annie Judge – is the best in the state.

Maura Smeader

This Archmere goalie may be only a ninth-grader, but at least she’s small and not imposing. But before the game, she got the loudest applause on introduction along with Caroline Donovan, who was related to more people. And that was a “tell” for the Cape fans that the girl can play. “I played goalie in youth lacrosse, and my brother Connor (a senior) is the goalie on the boys’ team. And we both play Cape this week,” Maura said. Maura understood that 13 saves is a great game even though Cape rang the bell 19 times on 35 shots. Alia Marshall, Lindsay Monigle, Victoria Lockwood and Mallory Jones all got stoned by Maura. A great goalie game – give props where they’re due.
