Athletes of the Week Oct. 20

October 20, 2017
Luke Burton

This Beacon seventh-grader has been tearing up cross country courses this month, as he remains Beacon’s top finisher each meet. Last week, Luke ran 10:25 for 3K, a personal best, and one of the top 20 performances in the country for 12-year-olds. On the Brandywine Creek course Oct. 14, Luke ran 2.2 miles in 12:59 to finish second overall. Luke won a national championship as a 9-year-old and was second as a 10-year-old. Next week, Luke will be one of the favorites at the Southern Delaware Championships, before facing a tough Mariner frontrunner in Brian Sponaugle Monday, Oct. 30.

Katie Kuhlman

This Mariner seventh-grader is the leader on a talented girls’ team for coach Kenny Riedel. Katie finished second last week at the Brandywine Invitational in 14:42 for 2.2 miles. Katie led her team over Sussex Academy Oct. 16, completing the 2.14-mile course in 14:40. Katie is gearing up for the Southern Delaware Championships and then it’s on to Regionals and Nationals, where she has a goal of finishing in the top 15. “Katie is more focused this year and has set some goals she wants to achieve,” said Seashore Striders coach Dan MacElrevey. “She is working hard each week to reach them.”

Macey Mitchell

Macey is listed as a freshman and the starting field hockey goalie for 2-9 Bryn Athyn College, which is 20 miles northeast of Philadelphia. She played high school hockey at Sussex Tech. In a 4-0 loss to Delaware Valley College Oct. 11, Macey finished the game with a career-high 24 saves. Bryn Athyn plays in the North East Athletic Conference. Bryn Athyn closes out NEAC action Friday, Oct. 20, at home versus Morrisville State. Bryn Athyn has a beautiful campus and it costs $33,000 per year for tuition and room and board. The small Christian liberal arts college has about 300 students. Macey stopped four out of five shots Oct. 17 in a 1-0 loss to Wilson College. A great person and athlete in a good place, that’s Macey Mitchell.

Hannah Picconi

A junior honors student at Delmarva Christian High School, this 5-foot-10 middle front player is giving opposing teams the Royals treatment, recently knocking down 17 kills against Worcester Prep in the semifinal of the ESIAC Tournament. So far this season, she has garnered 103 kills while serving 24 aces and registering 31 blocks for the 13-1 Royals. "I just love volleyball," said the National Honor Society member who plays for the Premier travel volleyball team in the off-season. "Hannah is a very hard worker and is very coachable," said Royals coach Jim Berger. "It was great to see her have a breakout game. Having 17 kills in a three-game match is very impressive." Hannah hopes to pursue a collegiate volleyball career and go into the occupational therapy field after graduation.
