Athletes of the Week Sept. 16

September 16, 2016

Olivia Brozefsky

A freshman varsity performer, Olivia is Cape’s top cross country runner on the girls' team, coming off a career at Beacon where she pretty much dominated the distance events. At the Lake Forest Invitational at Killens Pond run under brutally hot conditions Sept. 10, Olivia placed seventh in a time of 21:38, which is a 6:57/mile pace. Naomi Bowser of Smyrna was the only Henlopen Conference girl to run ahead of Olivia. “It was so hot. I did feel a little sick during the race,” Olivia said. When asked if she played any other sports, the fit freshman responded, “I’m just a runner.”

Zoe Callard

Zoe rocks a high level of fitness. She's now a sophomore at Cape, a product of the Beacon track dynasty. At the Lake Forest Invitational Sept. 10, Zoe ran 23:56 for a top 40 finish and Cape's second girl. Zoe ran a personal-best in the low 21s at last year's Henlopen Conference meet. She's a self-confident and knowledgeable runner. “I’m going to swim this year for the cross-training benefits,” Zoe said. “Last year, I ran all three seasons, which makes you more prone to injury.” “Zoe is just tough in practice and meets,” said assistant coach Rob Percival. Zoe has an older sister, Phoebe, who is a senior.

Tyre Maull

Tyre is a 6-foot-1, 275-pound starting sophomore guard for the 2-0 Stevenson Mustangs. He is his own big story, but part of a bigger one. When he was a sophomore at Cape, coach Bill Collick said of Tyre, Brandon Nixon, Julius Tyler and Devin Miller, “I’ve got to get those young guys going; if not, shame on me.” Tyre Maull going away and becoming a starter on a college football team is monumental, any parent of a big old lineman can tell you that. Tyre has been back to Cape, where he earned his bones, and talks about coming back to give back. Tyre is majoring in business communication, maybe be like his uncle Robert “Bo Diddley” Ames at American Cedar, but Tyre has football coach written all over him.

Anna Stancofski

A freshman varsity field hockey player, Anna didn’t know she was starting on defense until her name was announced during pregame introductions. “We decided late and Kate forgot to tell her,” said Cape assistant coach Debbie Windett. “She looked a little stunned and nervous, but she sure didn’t play that way.” Anna played right-back on defense. She is quick and fearless going to the ball, and she's already a crowd favorite - they enjoy shouting out her name, “Anna!” Anna also plays lacrosse and is an honors and Academic Challenge student. When asked if she had any other talents or passions, Anna said, “I play the piano.”
