Athletes of the Week Sept. 22

September 22, 2017
Erin Coverdale

A sophomore field hockey player at Franklin & Marshall, Erin was named Offensive Player of the Week Sept. 17. She recorded two goals in a 5-0 win over Eastern Sept. 13 and tallied a hat trick in the Centennial Conference opener against Muhlenberg Sept. 16. Erin finished the week with 11 shots and leads the conference with six total goals on the season. F & M beat Dickinson 2-0 Sept. 20 to improve to 5-1 on the season. A very cagey character best describes Coverdale on the field, as Cape fans know after watching her be part of three state championship teams and earn first-team all-state honors in 2015.

Zack Gelof

Zackzilla is the leading scorer for the 4-0 Cape soccer team, having scored 11 goals in four games including three consecutive hat tricks over the last three games, which included three versus Indian River, four against Dover and another three versus Holly Grove Christian School of Maryland. Zack is a big guy for a midfielder and a very dangerous player on throw-ins and corner kicks. A top-flight student and senior on the way to the University of Virginia to play baseball, his headers always seem ticketed for a part of the goal where the goalie can’t reach them. “Zack has been just unbelievable this season, and he makes it look effortless,” said coach Patrick Kilby. “He is surrounded by good players, which just makes him better.”

Sam Jones

When Cape football hosts Northeast, Md., Sept. 22, Sam will do something no other freshman has ever done, and that is start at quarterback. Coach Bill Collick has moved senior Zach Dale back to his normal position as a receiver and handed the keys to the 5-foot-11, 195-pound Jones, who last year played at Millsboro Middle and led coach Lance Keeler’s team to an undefeated season. “He is ready,” Collick said. Jones is just 15 years old and has a resemblance to Dak Prescott of the Cowboys, but Sam is more of a Deshaun Watson fan, having met Watson at a camp last summer. “My dream is to go to Clemson,” he said. Jones has a presence beyond his years. “I’ve been working on my confidence level,” he said. “My job is to control the huddle and keep everyone confident and ready to go on every play.”

Natalie Quigley

A sophomore cross country and field hockey player at Wesley, Natalie, a Sussex Tech grad, was a Wolverine of the Week for Sept. 11-17. Natalie placed sixth in the women’s 5K at the Delaware State Farm Run Sept. 15 with a time of 21:39. She ran an average mile time of 6:58. Then the next day, Natalie helped the Wesley field hockey team shut out Keystone 1-0 for its first win of the season. Wesley field hockey plays at Albright Monday, Sept. 25, while cross country will run at Salisbury in the Don Cathcart Invitational Saturday, Sept. 30. Natalie’s mom Jackie runs most of the local races and usually finishes in the top 3 for her age group.
