Athletes of the Week Sept. 23

September 23, 2016

Greg Boyce

This Cape sophomore cross country athlete ran away with the overall title Sept. 21 at Sussex Academy, establishing the course record (first race run on course) in a time of 17:57, a full 50 seconds ahead of teammate Sam Nye in 18:47. Greg was a freshman attacker on Cape’s varsity lacrosse team last fall. Greg ran 17:42 at the Sept. 16 White Creek Classic, good for ninth place among sophomores (second Delaware runner) in a field of 120 runners. Greg is also on the swim team.

Richard Carey

A Cape Henlopen senior on the soccer squad, this honors student only knows one speed and that's all out, full bore, 100 percent effort in whatever sport in which he is participating. A striker on the Cape team, Richard was chosen as a captain this season because of his leadership skills on the field as well as in the classroom and in the community. "Richard is a great leader on our team, verbally and by motivating his teammates through his play on the turf," said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. An honorable mention all-conference catcher for the Vikings baseball team in 2016, he batted .303 and had 21 throw-outs from behind the plate. Richard is also a member of the Cape FFA and Leo Club. When not playing for the Vikings, Richard lends his baseball talents to the Delmarva Aces travel team out of Berlin, Md.

Troy Humphries

The shot was digitized around the cyberworld of Sussex County as Troy buried the game-winner in double overtime at the 98-minute mark, as Cape escaped the upset by defeating Sussex Academy 1-0. Coach Pat Kilby said, “Troy has stepped into a starting role for us this season. He is playing opposite Jake Gelof as our left-outside mid. Troy is getting better with each game and has adjusted to the varsity game nicely. He has definitely done his job well, and we look for him to continue to produce for us.” Troy played travel ball with SAS goalie Adam Krim. “Dane [Palmer] had a throw-in and Zack [Gelof] headed the ball over to me on the far post. I tried to head it, but it basically hit my face and neck and found the goal,” Troy said.

Adam Krim

The Sussex Academy junior goalie from “down to Dagsboro” has been at SAS since sixth grade. A product of the River Soccer Club, Adam admitted he played the best game of his life Sept. 20 at home versus Cape, as the Seahawks took the favored Vikings to double overtime before losing at the 98-minute mark on a goal by Troy Humphries. Krim had stopped a Zack Gelof penalty kick with less than three minutes to play in regulation. The most staggering stat was Krim’s 28 credited saves in the game. “If that’s what the book says, but it seems a little  generous,” Adam said. Adam also plays basketball and lacrosse, but cited soccer as his best sport.
