Attic Treasures Sale benefits lives of older adults

October 13, 2017

Thank you to our many volunteers, our sponsors and the people who donated their time and gently used treasures for making the Greater Lewes Community Village's 4th annual Attic Treasures Sale a resounding success. We also want to thank the hundreds who came to the Brush Factory on Kings to purchase these treasures.

The sale, our major annual funding effort, realized more than $23,000, exceeding last year's goal by 30 percent. This would not have been possible without the many dedicated people who gave their time and talents.

Members of the wider community supported The Village by donating hundreds of items, such as art, furniture, china and treasures from their attics, basements and living rooms. The donations began in May and did not stop until a week before the sale Sept. 2.

Our thanks go to local businesses and organizations who demonstrated their support to our mission to enhance the lives of older adults in eastern Sussex County by making it possible for them to live independently at home for as long as possible.

Our Treasures Sale was made possible by Christine and Mark Chura who generously offered space at the Brush Factory on Kings to store the donations and to showcase them. We are deeply grateful. Thanks to Timarie and Blair Thompson of Delaware Beach Storage Center who provided secure storage for donated furniture and many large household items prior to the sale as well as transport for both pickup and delivery to the sale site. Thanks to our sponsors Russ Palmer Builders Inc., the Lee Ann Wilkinson Group, John Overton of ESP Estate Services, Rick Thomas of Mr. P's, and Ashley Schrock and Heather Landis of A 'Latte Soul. Our thanks also to the Cape Gazette and the newsroom staff and to our local radio and TV stations for publicizing our event.

Mark Quigley, Cathy Basenese, and the team from Sussex County Habitat for Humanity coordinated the packing and transfer of unsold Treasures items that were moved to the Habitat ReStore to assist in its mission to provide housing for Sussex families.

Sgt. Richard Hurt supervised Jr. ROTC cadets from Cape Henlopen High School - Almita Ramirez, Davi Martins, Esley Marin-Landa, and Alan Marin-Quiroz - who helped shoppers load cars and trucks, directed traffic, and assisted where needed.

We applaud the dedication of our board member Steve Hanzel, this year's chair of the Attic Treasures Sale, who with co-team leaders Anne Norman and Arlene Matzkin dedicated countless hours over several months to plan, think through logistics, and take on assignments along with the other members of the Treasures committee composed of Eunice Henderson, Kathryn Byrne, Christine Cronenwett, Pam Rankin, Jackie Finer, Lori Bernstein, Frank Powell, Lee Porter, Mary Ann Etu, Kathryn Harris, Colin Norman, Linda and Fred Dylla, Cindi and Dave Fooshe, Jack Andsaldi, and Executive Director Jackie Sullivan.

The success of the sale goes a long way toward fulfilling the mission of The Village, which is helping older adults live independently at home for as long as possible. The dedication of our volunteers and Village supporters enhances our 'community of caring' in eastern Sussex County.
