Avoiding probate is topic Nov. 7 at Georgetown library

November 6, 2016

A free class will be offered to the public from 6 to 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 7, at Georgetown Public Library. The class covers avoiding probate and how to make the transition of property occur seamlessly at the time of death, without opening an estate.

Sponsor Delaware Money School is providing an experienced and well-qualified instructor, Deirdre O'Shea McCartney, Esq. Having written, spoken and taught on the subject many times, McCartney breaks down what appears to be a complex subject into simple, understandable layman's terms.

This class focuses only on steps the layperson can take so assets transfer at death to the intended beneficiaries by operation of law, immediately and automatically. Those who have served as personal representatives or executors of an estate know firsthand how complex, expensive and time-consuming the probate process can be. Everyone should have a will prepared with a competent attorney. This class teaches how to prepare an estate in such a manner that the entire probate process can be avoided, and the will never comes into play.

The Money School is the signature program of the nonprofit Delaware Financial Literacy Institute. It offers more than 600 free, no-hassle personal finance classes a year, throughout the state, taught by volunteers from the nonprofit and corporate sectors. Register to attend the class online at www.dfli.org.

For more information on this class, contact McCartney by emailing Deirdre@sussexattorney.com or calling 302-855-0551. Georgetown Public Library is at 123 West Pine St., Georgetown.
