Baby Ben Bamforth wins Rehoboth Fire Fightin’ 5K

Running is in the blood like coagulation

The second annual Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company Fire Fightin’ 5K in downtown Rehoboth Aug. 21 attracted 167 runners and was won by Baby Ben Bamforth, a rising senior at Sussex Tech, in a time of 18:04. The question of the morning came from Race Director Tim Bamforth, “Who won?”

“The guy with the distinctive high arm carry is your son Ben,” Tim was told, as he responded, “Great, I was busy blowing up the finish line arch.”

Eve Hoffman, a 30-year-old orthopedic surgeon from Baltimore, was the first woman in a time of 20:12.

Chasing Ben to the finish line were Jeremiah Tylutki, 36, of Sauquoit, N.Y., in 18:07; Martin Rodriguez in 18:35; Dave Teklits in 19:06; and Ian Pilling in 19:59.

The women’s leaderboard behind Dr. Eve were Pam Moore, 37, from Boulder, Colo., in a time of 21:58; Megan Ginder in 23:52; Kim Geyer in 24:40 and Keren Rams in 24:59.

Ian Pilling, 43, from Fort Washington, Pa., won the male masters race in 19:55, while Kimberly Geyer, 48, from Millersville, Pa., was the female masters champion in 24:40.

The female 9 and under race was won by Brooke Terhune, 8, in 27:14, while Bree Terhune, 6, took third in 44:51.

Jack Pilling, 12, in 23:42 and Alex Pilling, 10, in 26:49 took the top two spots in the male 10-13. Their mom Jen Pilling ran 26:50, assuring that all the Pillings cashed in at the awards ceremony.

Katie Kuhlman, 11, of Milton won 10-13 female in 26:52, while her dad Brett Kuhlman, 44, ran 30:53.

Jackie Quigley, 49, won her age group in 25:24.

Rick Poppleton, 63, continued to dominate the 60-64 age group in 21:18, with Robert Fitzgerald, 61, of Millsboro in second in 24:11.

New grandpa on the avenue Alan Quillen, 61, ran 25:15.

Kevin “Little Poppy” Smith, 67, of Lewes won the 65-69 age group in 26:19.  

The 70-74 male race saw Tim Abbott of Georgetown in first in 24:59 followed by Gene King in 27:19.

The next Seashore Striders events are the Saturday, Aug. 27 Ed Dean Memorial 4-mile Trail Run at Cedar Neck Road and Fred Hudson Road in Bethany Beach and the Sunday, Aug. 28 Sundance Racing Festival, which includes a 5K run or biathlon - a half-mile swim then a 5K run. Sashaying is encouraged but not mandatory.
