Barry McBurney, proud Marine veteran

Barry McBurney, 84, of Millsboro, passed away Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017, at his home.

He was born in Newark, N.J., in 1933, and spent his early years in South Orange/Maplewood, N.J. After graduating from Columbia High in 1951 where he was active on the track and field team, he then joined the Marine Corps. Besides combat ribbons, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. After three years of service in the Marines, Barry enrolled in Fairleigh Dickinson University, graduating in 1962.

Barry married Jean Goeddert after his service years, and brought up their four children while living in New Jersey, Maryland and Indiana. Barry was active in the Lutheran Church as a Sunday school teacher, member of the church council and president of the League of Young Adult Lutherans. While working in New Jersey, he was an advisor in Junior Achievement of Union County. Barry and his family lived in Hillside, N.J., for 30 years. As his children were growing he was their Little League manager, Pop Warner coach and Cubmaster. His early years as a Boy Scout with 11 merit badges helped prepare him for his service life as well as leading his children in civic activities. Barry married Janet Marinos in 1990, and they moved from Hillside to Millsboro shortly after his retirement in 1999.

Barry was a professional materials manager serving in this capacity with several companies in the MidAtlantic states. He was a member of The Association for Operations Management and served as vice president and district manager of the MidAtlantic region of the United States. In retirement, Barry was an active boating enthusiast and enjoyed cruising on the Indian River Bay during the summer. He was a member of BoatUS, American Legion Post 28 and AARP.

Barry has four children from his early marriage and enjoys his visits to Bill and his two children, James and daughter Samantha; Barry and his two sons, Matthew and Sean; Eileen and her two children, Amanda and Mark, all living in New Jersey, and his daughter Kathy living in Miami, Fla. Barry also has two stepsons, Dean Marinos and his wife Sheila, and Tom Marinos and his wife Laurie and Dean's daughter, Madison.

A visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 4, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 5, in the Chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.
