Beacon girls, Mariner boys win middle school showdown

The Cape Henlopen School District middle schools met on the hardwood of Cape in the annual inter-district matchup Feb. 2. The Beacon girls and the Mariner boys won to take home middle school bragging rights for the 2017 season.

The Beacon girls defeated Mariner 31-16. Beacon was led by Emily Monigle with eight points. Rounding out the scorebook were Mehkia Applewhite with five, Diana Nauman with four, Haley Craig with four and Jocelyn Leach, Ella Rishko, Destiny Kusen and Breahna Kusen each with two.

Mariner was paced by Jhayden Hollomon with three, Treasure Mistretta with four, Natalie Hunter with five, Sydney Jefferson with two and Jayla Johnson with two.

The Mariner boys defeated rival Beacon 37-25. They were paced by Nate Sivels and Jalen Myers with 10 points each, while Gabe Best added six. Beacon was led by Tai'shaun Abbott with nine points and Kay'von Allen with eight.

All teams will play in the Capitol Classic held at Mariner Thursday, Feb. 16.
