The Beacon Middle School girls’ basketball team topped off an outstanding season by winning the Capital Classic Pepsi Division Feb. 18 at Lake Forest High School. The a 32-24 victory over Dover Middle School capped an undefeated season for the Vikings. They stand on top of the middle school mountain at 13-0.

“I’m kind of speechless,” said Beacon coach Sam Purple. “We worked super hard this season, and the girls earned every minute of it. It was exciting ending the season 13-0 with our eighth-graders. It was exciting.”

The sweet play of the Vikings’ M&M, Morgan Mahoney and Mehkia Applewhite, led the way for Beacon with 11 and nine points, respectively. Lauryn Head added eight points, while Brianna Loper and Ella Rishko hit for two each.

“We got in a little foul trouble during the tournament, but our bench really stepped up and did a great job,” Purple said. “They came in and we didn’t skip a beat. The little ones did a really good job. I’m really excited at what the future holds for them. I think it’s going be exciting and bright.”

Making the Capital Classic All-Tournament team were Mahoney, Head and Applewhite. Rishko was awarded the Sportsmanship Trophy, and Applewhite was awarded the Pepsi Division MVP.
