Bethany Beach triathlon celebrates milestones

October 5, 2016

The Bethany Beach First Responders Sprinternational Triathlon-Duathlon-Aquabike, presented by PNC Bank Sept. 18, celebrated two milestones: the fifth anniversary of the event and the one-year anniversary of the recovery of David Marine, a 2015 triathlete who required emergency medical attention on the course.

With great attendance and registration, and perfect weather, the fifth anniversary of this event launched Sept. 16 at the Starboard Restaurant in Dewey Beach and ended on the Bethany Beach boardwalk for a post-race party  with the athletes who competed in the triathlon, duathlon, aquabike or relay and their family and friends.

“When we started these races, our goal was multifaceted. We wanted to host an event to show off our incredible Sussex County beaches, while raising money for Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company and first responders and Autism Speaks, in a safe environment, with the utmost of professionalism in an unparalleled party atmosphere.  A tall order! We nailed it each year, and could not be more pleased. We are incredibly grateful to our sponsors, athletes, volunteers and fans,” said Race Director Rick Hundley.

That Sunday also marked another anniversary – the return of David Marin, a 38-year-old athlete from Pottstown, Pa., who collapsed before the opening ceremony at last year’s event. When he collapsed, members of the Sussex County Emergency Medical Services team, Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Company Chief Brian Martin and members of BBVFC Fire Police and other emergency staff sprang into action, immediately started CPR and were able to use the defibrillator and other life-saving measures. Fortunately, due to his immediate care, Marin recovered fully and returned to compete this year.

“We are grateful to our well-trained and capable first responders, and it is for this reason we host this event. We are so glad that we can help equip them to continue their good work through our fundraisers.” said Ernie Felici, race director.

In addition to BBVFC first responders, Autism Speaks will also receive a contribution from Focus Multisports.

“With the fifth successful tris and dus under our belts, we plan to really wow everyone next year. We promise even more exciting twists, promotions and swag. No. 6 is going to be the best event yet!” said Hundley.  “Save the date for next year – Sunday, Sept. 17.  We already have registration open.”
