Blue Mass scheduled for May 5 in Wilmington postponed

May 4, 2017

At the request of the Delaware law enforcement community, the Annual Blue Mass to honor those who serve the community in the public safety sector (police, fire and EMS), scheduled for Friday, May 5, at 11 a.m. at Saint John the Beloved Church in Wilmington, has been postponed. A new date for the Blue Mass has yet to be determined.

At a meeting with Bishop Francis Malooly, a high-ranking officer with the Wilmington Police Department officially requested, on behalf of his department, New Castle County Police, and the Delaware State Police, that the Mass be postponed so that more first responders will have the opportunity to attend this meaningful event. A memorial service for Delaware State Police Cpl. Stephen Ballard, who was killed in the line of duty last week, will be May 5 at the Wilmington riverfront.

The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington was established in 1868 and comprises 56 parishes, 18 missions and 36 schools serving the State of Delaware and the nine counties of Maryland's Eastern Shore. The diocese will celebrate its 150th anniversary with a year-long celebration beginning March 3, 2018. Information is available at www.cdow.org.
