Brahms' ‘Requiem’ to open Southern Delaware Chorale season Nov. 12

October 19, 2017

The Southern Delaware Chorale will open its 2017-18 concert season with a performance of Brahms' “Requiem" at 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 12, at Epworth United Methodist Church in Rehoboth Beach. The work will be performed in English under the baton of Artistic Director Joey Shortall. The chorale will be accompanied by Assistant Conductor Sarah Rose and Rebecca McDaniel playing a four-hand piano duet.

Brahms composed this masterpiece between 1866 and 1868. The fifth movement, the soprano solo "Ye Now Are Sorrowful," was prompted by the memory of his mother, who had died in 1865.

Members of local high school choral groups will join the chorale in this concert. Cape Henlopen High School, under the direction of Miriam Sunnergren, and Sussex Technical High School, under the direction of Sarah Rose, will sing their own set of music in the concert and will join the chorale in the well-known fourth movement, "How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place." Southern Delaware Chorale members always look forward to collaborating with local high school singers and are impressed by their professionalism and musicianship.

The chorale's Lee Mitchell Scholars will also be featured in the concert. The Lee Mitchell Scholars program provides juniors and seniors in high school free voice lessons and membership in the chorale. This year's Lee Mitchell Scholars are Sarah Aleman from St. Thomas More Academy, Ryan Bradley and Hannah Wolk from Sussex Tech, and Sequoi Eley and Abbey Ruark from Sussex Central High School.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $8 for students. To purchase tickets, visit Puzzles in Lewes or Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach, call 302-260-7022 or go to www.southerndelawarechorale.org.
