Breast cancer coalition to hold 5K at DE Turf Sept. 13
The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition Inc. announced the inaugural Battle on the Turf 5K Run/Walk and 1.5 Mile Fun Walk will be at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 13, at the DE Turf Sports Complex in Frederica. This will be the first 5K to be held at DE Turf, central Delaware's state-of-the-art, all-turf sports destination venue. The 5K will benefit programs that increase breast cancer awareness, promote the importance of early detection, provide access to mammograms and bilingual screening navigators, and offer support and resources to women and men in the local community who are newly diagnosed or facing a recurrence of breast cancer.
DBBC Executive Director Eileen Filliben Edmunds, JD/MBA, says organizers are thrilled to bring a new breast cancer 5K to the Kent County community. She said, "It is vitally important that the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition continue to support our community through outreach and education. Estimates from the American Cancer Society indicate that in Delaware, 840 new cases of female breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2017. This inaugural 5K will introduce us to members of the Kent and Sussex county communities, and educate the public on our lifesaving programs and services. We are excited to partner with DE Turf to showcase their amazing facility and their support as a community partner."
This high-energy, family-friendly race is open to women, men and children of all ages. On-site race registration is $30 and opens at 5 p.m. Sept. 13. This race is an opportunity for community members to honor breast cancer survivors and remember those who have passed on. Participants can register as individuals or as part of a team.
